Once upon a time, the Faluns Sea stretched from Brittany to Sologne. It retreated under the pressure of the Alpine Massif which pushed the Touraine region towards the west, the sea deposited its sand on the plateaux and reversed river courses which had previously flowed north. Low plateaux with wide valleys have formed a soft, undulating landscape, punctuated by rivers and their tributaries which join the Loire here. Candes-Saint-Martin, the meeting point of the Vienne and the Loire, has the lowest altitude of 28 metres. The Indre-et-Loire reaches its highest point of 186 metres to the east, at the signal of Céré-la-Ronde. The influences of the sea penetrating the valleys from the west have given Touraine a mildness of climate and a luminosity of sky. Touraine can be characterised by a mitigated oceanic climate with evenly distributed precipitations and a mild average annual temperature.

In short, the Atlantic influences western coastal areas, making for temperate weather, with rainfall distributed evenly throughout the year. Inland, summers are usually hot and sunny.
